Simple Food Health Tips

Do you want to lose weight?
There is tons of literature out there of varying degrees of legitimacy. Simple food health tips for eating healthy is directly related to fitness and weight loss, yet where does a person begin in order to think about eating right? Keep it simple; there are no secrets. Knowing some basic tips can be helpful. Consider the following:

Power of Protein

It is important for you to ingest foods and drinks with high amounts of protein. Protein is broken down by your body in order to fuel muscles and to promote the body’s various systems. Different foods offer their respective amounts of protein, so it is important to check nutritional information. Additional protein can be ingested via health bars, weight training supplements, and sports nutrition supplements.

Viva la Vitamins

Vitamins and minerals are a vital component of a healthy diet. Vitamins and minerals facilitate the body’s functions and potential. For instance, vitamin B complex can help the body burn carbohydrates and vitamin C contributes to skin and eye health. A balanced diet offers a lot of vitamins and minerals, yet isolated dietary vitamins are available to those who need help finding all needed nutrients.

Shapely Snacks

‘Snacks’ are supposed to help bridge meals. Snacking can become detrimental if you’re consuming ‘junk food’ or snacks high in fat and calories. It is much more beneficial to seek simple food health tips such as nutritional bars, fruits, or vegetables. Snacking can be habitual; so, if you’re going to do it, then be mindful of your snack’s health contents.

Drinks and Inches

Some people are amazed to find soft drinks, sodas, and other refreshments negatively influence their diets. In some cases, a drink such as a ‘shake’ can contain just as many calories as a meal in addition to a ton of fat calories. Drinks can definitely add inches to your waist, so search for health drinks. If you’re a person who enjoys drinks as snacks, then consider pre-mixed nutritional drinks or get a blender and experiment with fruits and vegetables.

Crash Diet

A crash diet is a diet which involves restricting the calories intake in the food. It is done to achieve a quick or rapid weight loss. It is different from starvation as in crash diet involves taking (eating or drinking) of minimum calories required by the body. It is not meant to last for more than a week.

A crash diet should be limited as much as you can. As it involves minimizing of calories intake in the food so the amount of fat you take on a daily basis also reduces. So your weight may reduce quickly but may professionals and dieticians recognize this as a very risky way of losing extra weight. Crash diet can be paired with starvation diet and other quick weight loss methods like taking diet pills and extreme exercise routines that can be harmful to the body.

Does a crash diet work?
It will do wonders for you in the first week. You will lose a lot of weight. Men and women have found that they have lost around 5 pounds or even more during the first few days. But this weight loss can be considered as ideal or true weight loss as most of the weight that you lose is water weight. Most of the glycogen (a type of glucose) gets burned to due to a low-calorie diet and absorbs all the excess fluid in the body.

Also, the weight loss won’t last for a long time. As days will go on the amount of weight loss will decrease and you will reach a point where your weight won’t be reduced any further. Most of the crash diet people are known to gain all the weight back as the most weight lost in water mass. Also, your weight may also fluctuate a lot due to continuously changing diet.

What effect it has on the body?
Every individual will have a different metabolism (a rate at which body burns calories). During a crash diet the body will adjust itself as it will be receiving a low amount of calories. So the body will adjust to burn very few calories to perform all the necessary body functions. The body has the ability to maintain this decreased metabolism for a number of months or even years. So the body will gain weight even if you take fewer calories more as your metabolism rate has reduced a lot.

What are the Health Risks of It?
It will have both short-term and long-term health problems. These problems can be either mental or physical.

Mental or Emotional Health Problems
It has a deep effect on mental or emotional health. A crash diet will leave cause you extreme food hungry. You are more like to have conflicting mood when crash dieting. You will also tend to be more bad-tempered or depressed than usual. It will also have serious mental health disorders like eating disorder anorexia and bulimia.

Nutritional Deficiency
It will make you restrictive and you will be unable to eat healthy food. It will cause nutritional deficiency like iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, potassium & sodium deficiency. Out of this potassium & sodium deficiency is most dangerous as these are responsible for proper nerve and muscle function. They are important for regulating heartbeats and low potassium & sodium levels can cause a heart attack.

Vital Organ Damage
It can damage your vital organs which rely on energy from carbohydrate intake. The crash diet causes you to reduce the calorie intake in the body. This can lead you to have a liver failure, kidney failure, and heart attack or even suffer a stroke.

Osteoporosis
Long-term crash dieters suffer from this disease osteoporosis that causes your bones to become extremely fragile. This happens due to low intake of calcium in the body.

Avoiding Crash Diet
It is better to lose weight by proper methods than to crash diet. You should speak with your doctor or dietitian before deciding your weight loss program. It is important that you don’t reduce the intake of calories too fast as it will have a bad effect on the body. Choose a healthier food option rather than junk food and see your weight will reduce in the proper way and not affect your body at all.

Diet Menu

Losing weight can only come from a diet menu and a change in your eating habits. You will find in your meals all the protein, complex carbohydrates, fatty acids, fibers, minerals, and vitamins that you need to be and feel healthy.

Choosing lean cuts of meat and poultry as well as using healthy cooking methods for fish is a good source of iron and proteins without consuming a high quantity of saturated fats.

A large variety of vegetables will provide fiber and vitamins with a low amount of calories and a small portion of starch (source of complex carbohydrates) at each meal will provide an important source of energy, which suppresses hunger.

Dairy is the main source of calcium, which is important to fight osteoporosis, and should be consumed low fat or fat-free.

It is important to focus on what is good for you without losing the pleasure of eating. A very strict diet, which will be difficult to follow and will make you feel hungry and frustrated, is not recommended. It can lead you to give up and go back to your old eating habits. In addition, fast weight loss involves the loss of water and muscle. Muscles are very important to have a nice body shape, tone, and a higher base metabolic rate (calories burnt at rest). Exercising on a regular basis is a great way to improve your base metabolic rate and achieve a leaner figure.

The goal of a successful program is to help you lose pounds and stabilize your weight instead of gaining all the pounds back as soon as you stop paying attention to what you eat. Once you reach your healthy weight, it’s time for a stabilization phase, where you keep eating healthy and well balanced but will reintroduce in your diet a little more vegetable oil for cooking, a desert once a week, a little bit more starch.

Keeping your mind busy by exercising, reading, and taking advantage of your free time with new activities will help you forget that you are dieting. Having your new healthy habits become part of your way of life in a very natural way is the key to your success.

Diet Menu is a USA based dieting menu and health program, whose discussed the benefits of Best Weekly Healthy Diet Menu.

Diet Vs Diet

Diet vs diet, Americans spend tens of billions of dollars a year in their quest for losing weight and getting fit. As I’ve said before, there are a number of different approaches to dieting, and a number of these approaches will produce results. The key is in finding an approach that works for YOU, and one you can be CONSISTENT with.

Listed here, for you, are some of the most popular diets available today, some information about them, and the results of some studies done by some of the top universities in the country. The studies of diet vs diet followed groups of people following one of the specific diets listed and compared the weight loss results of each group of dieters after extended periods of time. So which diet will shed the most pounds after a year? Keep on reading to find out…the results may surprise you!

Image of people exercising on the street.

The Diets:

Atkins Diet (low carb)
A high protein diet encourages some form of meat at every meal and restricts carbohydrates.

Weight Watchers (low fat)
Emphasizes portion control. Encourages grains, fruits, vegetables, and modest servings of meat.

Zone Diet
40/30/30 ratio theoretically stabilizes hormones that trigger hunger and weight gain.

Mediterranean Diet
Prescribes grains, vegetables, and sources of healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts.

Ornish Diet (Low-fat vegetarian)
Recommends eliminating nuts, meat, and fish.

THE RESULTS:

Low Carb vs. Low Fat vs. the Mediterranean

Pounds lost at six months: Low carb 14 lbs, WW 10lbs, Mediterranean 10 lbs

Final loss (two years): Low carb 12 lbs, WW 7 lbs, Mediterranean 10 lbs

Low Carb vs. Low Fat vs. Zone vs. Ornish

Pounds lost at six months: Low carb 14 lbs, WW 9 lbs, Zone 6 lbs, Ornish 6 lbs

Final loss (one year): Low carb 10, WW 6 lbs, Zone 4 lbs, Ornish 5 lbs

Low Fat vs. Exercise

Pounds lost at six weeks: WW 6 lbs, Exercise 2 lbs

Final loss (three months): WW 9 lbs, Exercise 3 lbs

So what does this mean for you?

Well, by looking at the numbers, you can see that all of the diets produced results. And, with the exception of the subjects following the Mediterranean diet, the dieters tended to gain some of the weight they had lost back over the long term. This is most likely because they failed to follow the diet as strictly over time as they had in the beginning.

This is a problem most dieters have with most diets…consistency. Everyone charges out of the gate ready to cut down on carbs, fat, or to consume the magic ratio, only to find that after a period of time this way of eating is something they can’t maintain over the long term. It’s not a change they’re willing to make with the rest of their life.

My advice to you for diet vs diet is the same as always…choose something that’s right for YOU. Choose foods you like, eliminate the refined ones, and consume in MODERATION in combination with EXERCISE. The above diets work because they control the amount, and in most cases, the type of food being eaten. As should be evident from the results, the control part is much more important than the type of food being eaten.

So take control of what you eat. If one of these diets works for you, then GREAT! Pick it, and stick with it. If none of them float your boat, no problem. Choose the foods that work for you, control how much you eat, and be consistent. Combine your efforts with some exercise, commit to sticking with it for at least a year, and watch what happens.

Organic Food Nutrition

by CAFNR

As Americans become more and more savvy about organic food nutrition and natural ways to boost health and wellness, the organic food industry is enjoying unprecedented growth.

According to the Organic Farming Research Foundation, there are more than 11,000 certified organic producers in the U.S. today compared to 2500 in 1999.

About 70 percent of Americans buy organic food occasionally and nearly one quarter buy it every week, according to a recent survey conducted by the Hartman Group.

While some buy organic to support its environmentally friendly practices, most are trying to cut their exposure to chemicals in the foods they eat.

Studies have linked pesticides in our food to a host of health problems including headaches, miscarriage, birth defects, nervous system disorders and asthma.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, chemical pesticides have the potential to cause an additional 1.4 million cases of cancer in this generation of Americans.

Who knows how much that will cost in tears and suffering, notwithstanding the potential bill to the nation’s taxpayers under Obamacare?

Organic Nutritional Advantages

A study conducted at Rutgers University concluded that, on average, organically grown foods have an 87 percent higher concentration of magnesium, potassium, iron, and copper. Organic tomatoes were found to yield 500 percent more calcium than conventionally produced tomatoes.

To classify a food as organic food nutrition, it must have been grown without the use of harmful synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers and must be produced on a farmland that has been free of such chemicals for at least three years.

Feeding the soil with organic matter instead of ammonia and other synthetic fertilizers has been proven to increase the nutrients in produce, resulting in foods with higher levels of vitamins and minerals.

Higher Costs Explained

Organic foods generally cost more but they can be well worth the extra money, considering the higher nutritional values they deliver.

Another cost factor: Organic farmers don’t receive federal subsidies like traditional farmers; therefore, the price of organic food reflects the true costs of growing and delivering.

Organic farms also tend to be smaller and more labor intensive. (Bear in mind that the price of conventional food does not reflect the cost of environmental cleanups that we pay for through our tax dollars.)

Tasting the Organic Difference

Locally grown organic food is said to be superior in terms of taste and freshness by enthusiastically loyal consumers who disdain the commercially grown crops in the markets.

Considering that most U.S. grown produce is picked up four to seven days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped from an average distance of 1500 miles before being sold, certainly, the quality of taste can suffer.

And since much of the produce available in supermarket chains is imported from Mexico, Asia, Canada, South America and other countries, the time from harvest to market is greatly extended even longer, costing nutritional value as well as taste.

The Bigger Cause

In addition to providing superior nutritional benefits to humans, organic foods are also better for the health of Mother Nature.

Organic foods promote sustainability by establishing an ecological balance to prevent problems with soil fertility such as those prevalent in most soil used by mega-farms.

Additionally, from a long-term perspective, organic farms actually conserve energy and further protect the environment by maintaining ecological harmony in a truly local sense of the word.

Support Your Local Grower

You are encouraged to do some research to find out where you can find locally grown produce in your area. It makes a good table sense to eat seasonably and by doing so, supporting your local organic farmers market on a year-round basis.

Buying from your local farmers market, produce or fruit stand also has the added benefit of contributing much-needed dollars to the local economy, as well as providing you and your family an opportunity to make new friends.

While today’s down economy is putting a damper on organic food nutrition and food sales growth, it only serves us better to know that local farmers markets and independent growers provide us with a thrifty and healthy alternative to the commercial organics currently sold in supermarkets.

And considering the fact these fresh local products can cost you so much less, you best be putting local organic farmers and growers on your grocery to-do list today!

Three-second rule (#38/365)

I think I’ve mentioned it in passing before (on my blog perhaps), but I’m awful (or very good) at eating food that’s been on the floor and I call it the three-second rule.

In most cases the three-second rule works fine, I’m happy to just pick it up and shove it in my mouth. If it’s hairy/dirty, I’ll rub it with my fingers, or pick a few hairs off, and then eat it.

I don’t know if it’s my inherent Jewness, or… maybe my parents just never taught me otherwise.

Either way, it seems to have served me well. I last had a cold when I was 8 or so, and I’ve only visited a doctor once when I was 1 — for some inoculations. A few months ago I visited a hospital for the first time since my birth! (I was picking up a friend who worked there.)

So, yeah, either I’ve just been very lucky applying the three-second rule or, on the other hand, eating food off the floor is extremely good for building up a good immune system.

Yesterday

Stop that or you’ll go blind!

image above: This terrifying contraption is called a ‘jugum penis.’ It was designed to prevent both masturbation and ‘nocturnal incontinence.’

Should a man become aroused in the middle of the night, this contraption would clamp down, extinguishing both his desire as well as his erection in a very sudden and painful way!

The Jugum Penis was intended to cure “spermatorrhoea”, a Victorian-era name for nocturnal emissions. The device was fashioned out of a metal ring, which would fit at the base of the penis and was attached with a clip.

The Victorian era, in all its prudish glory, became the ultimate era of repression, denial, and sin. In fact, during this time, girls were restricted from riding horses or bicycles, sewing, and squatting down to do laundry because the feelings associated with these activities could turn a nice girl naughty.

Even cereal magnates Kellog and Graham jumped on the anti-masturbation bandwagon, giving “the finger” to using one’s hands.

Dr. John Kellogg, the creator of the ever-popular Rice Krispies cereal. Both foods were developed to curb masturbatory impulses in young boys, as this health food movement postulated that bland foods were meant to increase health and decrease interest in sex.

Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of The Scout Association, incorporated a passage in the 1914 edition of Scouting for Boys warning against the dangers of masturbation. This passage stated that the individual should run away from the temptation by performing a physical activity which was supposed to tire the individual so that masturbation could not be performed.

By 1930, however, Dr. F. W. W. Griffin, editor of The Scouter, had written in a book for Rover Scouts that the temptation to masturbate was “a quite natural stage of development” and, citing Ellis’ work, held that “the effort to achieve complete abstinence was a very serious error.”

‘Close your eyes and think of England’, are sayings attributed to various Victorians either as their own comment on marital sexual relations or as advice from mothers to daughters on impending marriage.

In the Victorian era, life was simpler; queens wore tiny crowns, heroin was legal and masturbation was apparently the greatest threat to life as they knew it.

Blamed for everything from insanity to acne, the people of this era spent a great deal of time and effort creating and patenting devices to protect us from this great evil, whether we wished to be saved or not.

The myths that masturbation leads to blindness, or causes you to grow hair on the palms of your hands, or will cause someone to be impotent later in life, or leads to mental illness, have all been debunked many times; but they seem to have a life of their own and crop up again and again.

In fact, masturbating has been an almost universal practice since history has been recorded. Probably 90 percent of men have masturbated at some time (and many would say the other 10 percent are lying); and it is also very common among women, especially since women’s liberation began to enable women to know and appreciate their bodies.

In the early part of this century, John Harvey Kellogg gained a reputation both as a nutritionist and a sexual adviser. The foods that Kellogg created (including the now-famous corn flakes) were designed to promote health and decrease interest in sex.

Mr. Kellogg thought sex was the ultimate abomination and remained celibate even in marriage. Masturbation was the worst sin imaginable to him. He believed it led to leprosy, tuberculosis, heart disease, epilepsy, dimness of vision, insanity, idiocy, and death. He also preached that masturbation led to bashfulness in some people, unnatural boldness in others, a fondness for spicy foods, round shoulders, and acne. That’s quite a list!

As we all know now, there are most definitely foods that promote health, but none in particular that decrease interest in sex or masturbation. So, you can eat all the corn flakes you want, and have good, safe sex!

You lose stamina by masturbating?.

Many boys are told that masturbating will cause them to be less energetic at sporting activities. Quite simply, that’s not true. To be good at sports, continue to practice your game and eat healthily and don’t worry about your nocturnal activities.

Masturbation leads to pimples?.

This myth was probably started by some harrowed parent who wanted their teenage child to get out of the bathroom so someone else could use it. And what better way to get teenagers to do something that to appeal to their sense of vanity?

The truth is that acne and pimples are caused by oily skin and have nothing to do with masturbation.

We will run out of sperm?.

Relax, your sperm is not finite and your body produces millions of it every day. By masturbating often, you will not run out.

Girls don’t masturbate?.

Yes, they do. And there’s no shame in it.

The opposite – girls masturbate way more than boys.

Masturbation leads to homosexuality?.

Your sexual orientation does not depend on whether or not you masturbate.
