Ramadhan (Ramadan) is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. It’s when Muslims all over the world spend 30 days fasting and bettering themselves in principles of faith.

Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from sexual intercourse (during fasting), violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry and sarcastic retorts, and gossip. People are meant to try to get along with each other better than they normally might. All obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided. Purity of both thought and action is important. The fast is an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm.

Fasting during Ramadan is not obligatory for several groups for whom it would be excessively problematic. Children before the onset of puberty are not required to fast, though some do. However, if puberty is delayed, fasting becomes obligatory for males and females after a certain age. According to the Qur’an, if fasting would be dangerous to someone’s health, such as a person with an illness or medical condition (this can include the elderly), that person is excused.

The reason Muslims fast is to discipline their body and mind. The absence of food and drink and other pleasures provides a perfect opportunity to concentrate on prayer and worship. Not having the luxuries of life to hand makes it easier to reflect on life and be grateful for what we do have. Muslims use this month to start afresh and give their life a new direction.

The Promise of Natural Weight Loss Supplements

In the wake of the ongoing concern over the safety of prescription diet pills, the weight-conscious public is asking: Now what?

When taken properly, these nutritional agents carry none of the risks of prescription diet pills. Most of these products are simply nutrients, extracted from food or plants. You really have nothing to lose, except unsightly fat, by taking a more natural approach to weight loss. In fact, you have everything to gain in terms of better health, more energy, and an improved self-image!

You may be wondering, Are these products safe? Good question! Unlike prescription medicines, nutritional supplements aren’t approved by the FDA. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, supplement manufacturers can make nutrition support statements about their products statements that describe how the product functions in the body. But they aren’t allowed to claim that the product can treat or cure any disease.

Also, supplement labels must carry the following disclaimer: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”
But just because natural weight-loss supplements and other nutritional supplements aren’t approved by the FDA, that doesn’t mean they’re unsafe. Over the years, there have been many pharmaceutical agents that won FDA approval but due to serious, sometimes fatal, effects were pulled from the market.

Keep in mind that natural weight-loss supplements are derived from food or herbs and thus work with your body rather than against it (as many prescription medicines do). It’s always preferable to try the gentlest agent first. Some of these supplements do have some minor side effects, but they are far less serious than those of prescription diet pills.

Also, there is a wealth of scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of natural weight-loss products evidence you’ll read about here. Plus, many of these supplements have other health-promotion benefits. Natural supplements do many things! That’s one of their most redeeming values.

Natural weight-loss supplements are one more weapon against obesity a disease that’s killing us and draining our pocketbooks. Health experts report that a majority of the world’s population is now overweight, and that obesity costs consumers billions of dollars a year for health care. In the United States alone, the financial toll of obesity is more than $ 100 billion annually.

In fact, the United States has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world. According to a recent survey, nearly 74 percent of Americans age 25 or older are overweight. After smoking, which causes an estimated 500,000 deaths a year, weight-related conditions are the second leading cause of death in the United States, claiming 300,000 lives each year. But other developed countries are not far behind. In 1997, the British Medical Journal reported that the prevalence of obesity in many countries is now so high that it should be considered a pandemic which means an exceptionally large portion of the world is on the pudgy side.

Although overweight and obesity are considered to be appearance problems, they are in fact serious conditions, directly linked to a number of disabling and life-threatening diseases. Among them are heart disease, stroke, some cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, and mental health problems.

Why is obesity so deadly? Take the number-one killer, heart disease, for example. Obesity places a strain on the heart. It enlarges the heart’s ventricles, alters its function, and leads to other structural abnormalities.

Studies indicate that obese adults aged 20 to 45 are at nearly four times the risk of developing diabetes and more than five times the risk of getting high blood pressure than normal-weight adults.

Obese men have a significantly greater chance of dying from cancer of the colon, rectum, and prostate, and obese women have a greater risk of developing endometrial and postmenopausal breast cancers.

Plump women whose body fat is distributed around and above the waist run a particularly high risk of developing endometrial cancer, one of the most common cancers that afflict women. It usually occurs after menopause, and if detected early, it’s almost always curable. Scientists speculate that one reason for the risk is that upper-body-obese women have higher levels of the female hormone estrogen, which can set the stage for endometrial cancer.

Like endometrial cancer, most breast cancers have a hormonal link. As noted above, women with excess upper body fat have higher levels of estrogen, and some investigators think that these women run a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Obesity doesn’t cause breast cancer, but it encourages the spread of existing cancer.

If you’re obese, your bile may be oversaturated with cholesterol, a blood fat, and this can lead to the formation of gallstones.

Until only recently, it was assumed that a little weight gain at any age was okay. But studies have found that even a tiny gain can increase your odds of having a heart attack. In 1995, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published new guidelines that said middle-age spread was un-healthy and that for good health, people in their sixties should weigh the same as trim people in their thirties.

Backing up the USDA’s recommendations was one of the largest studies ever to examine the effects of weight on longevity. Published in 1998 in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study concluded that slimmer is definitely better at any age, including middle age and beyond.

This conclusion was based on American Cancer Society data on 324,135 men and women enrolled in the study in 1960 and then followed up in 1972. The data revealed that being overweight tended to shorten life expectancy up to about age 75. After that age, being heavy didn’t make much of a difference unless someone was seriously obese. People who maintained a healthy, ideal weight generally lived the longest.

Overweight and obesity are caused by multiple factors, and natural weight-loss supplements can tackle many of them. Let’s take a closer look.

Overeating. If you habitually eat more calories than you burn off, the surplus is stored as body fat. So why do we overeat? There’s no simple explanation, really, but a lot of it has to do with hunger, appetite, and satiety mechanisms that tell us when to eat and how much. They are centered in the hypothalamus, a small area of the brain located in the middle of the skull. The hypothalamus is the body’s center for controlling food intake. It also regulates thirst, metabolism, and body temperature.

Hunger is largely a physiological drive. About every four hours, your body signals that it’s time to eat by creating sensations such as hunger pangs or a feeling of low energy. After you start eating a meal, it takes about twenty minutes for your body to send satiety signals to the hypothalamus that you’re full. Continuing to eat beyond that points leaves you feeling stuffed. By eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full, you’ll have little trouble maintaining a healthy weight.

This maize is orange because it contains high levels of beta-carotene, the same substance that give carrots their color. Beta-carotene is a provitamin, and is converted to vitamin A within the human body.

Maize is the staple food for more than one billion people in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, but it is generally poor in provitamin A. It is estimated that between one third and half of all Zambian children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, which weakens their vision and immune systems, retards their growth, makes them more vulnerable to various diseases, and reduces their quality of life. In all, night blindness and other health problems caused by vitamin A deficiency affect more than 5 million children and nearly 10 million pregnant women, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

CIMMYT works with ZARI as part of HarvestPlus, a CGIAR challenge program that uses biofortification to improve the nutritional value of staple foods. The HarvestPlus maize team uses conventional breeding to create maize hybrids and open-pollinated varieties rich in provitamin A. In the research shown here, ZARI is evaluating advanced experimental varieties for yield and agronomic characteristics; the best of these will be tested for provitamin A content. Furthermore, scientists in CIMMYT and other organizations are now producing a new generation of varieties with more provitamin A than ever before. Alleles that can boost beta-carotene levels in grain, rare and previously found only in temperate maize, are being bred into tropical maize for developing countries.

The fighting in North Kivu between Rwandan Hutu rebels, government troops and local militias has led to the displacement of almost 300,000 people since December of last year. UNICEF has been responding throughout but three weeks ago we decided to increase our response with the creation of an Emergency Response Team. The team is composed of staff taken from our regular programmes in the Goma office. Thursday was the teams first mission in the field.
Shasha is a village of 15,000 people about an hour south west of Goma on the lake. About one hundred pygmy families have set up a spontaneous camp and another 200 families have been taken in by host families. The first families arrived in May but more people are coming all the time. The camp was made of banana leaf huts, about 20{c942b8bbd39434854c8ef92e91b384b6dd289f9edeef465467e53c6d5c3c1fa4} were still under construction. According to the inhabitants of the camp more people are on the way.
UNICEF and Solidarites have put in latrines, showers and repaired 2 fountains. Oxfam will later be doing a project to improve the distribution of water in the village. There is much more to be done, the displaced people cannot afford to pay for health care nor for schooling. The village head says that the displaced have not received any food aid and so the village is supporting them but this is a heavy burden for an already impoverished community. The villagers are also trying to find work for the pygmies to provide them with some kind of livelihood.

I’ve strolled through Riverside Park on several previous occasions (click here to see a collection of approximately seven other Flickr albums of my Riverside Park photos) — but even though the sign at the 96th Street entrance is always the same, and the pathway is always the same, the people and the individual vignettes are always different.

Sometimes it’s simply a function of the weather: people dress differently, act differently, and are engaged in different activities in early spring than they do in summer or late fall. But much of it simply has to do with the incredible variety of people who take advantage of the opportunity to relax, read a book, jog, or picnic with their families.

So … this just happens to be what it looked like in Riverside Park on the last day of May, in 2009.

Driven by health concerns about calories and caffiene, by misgivings about the quality of municipal tap water, and by the convenience of single-serving containers, the market for bottled water has exploded.

In 2007, Americans consumed 9 billion gallons of bottled water, almost 28 gallons per capita. By 2010, the volume of bottled water sold is expected to exceed that of soda.

. . . So why is it a problem? On reason is the water and energy needed to manufacture and dispose of the bottles. Jon Mooallem, writing in the New York Times Magazine in 2007, observed that "Americans will throw out more than two million tons of PET bottles this year." PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a petroleum-based product that is difficult to recycle. In 2005, approximately 18 million barrels of crude oil were required to produce the PET bottles we threw away. Eliminating those bottles would be the equivalent of taking 100,000 cars off the road.

It takes a lot of water to produce botled water. . . . The manufacture of the bottles requires twice as much as the bottles ultimately contain. Moreover, the filtering process uses between three and nine gallons of water for every filtered gallon that ends up on the shelf.

. . . Since 2002, citizens’ groups around the United States. . . have engaged in grassroots organizing and sometimes litigation to thwart new or expended bottled water plants. In almost every state, the target of the groups’ opposition is Nestle Waters North America, a wholly owned susidiary of the Switzerland-based food giant Nestle. . . . Nestle is the largest bottler of water in the United States.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of Indonesia’s Riau Islands. At 710.2 km2 (274.2 sq mi),[8] Singapore is a microstate and the smallest nation in Southeast Asia. It is substantially larger than Monaco and Vatican City, the only other surviving sovereign city-states.
Before European settlement, the island now known as Singapore was the site of a Malay fishing village at the mouth of the Singapore River. Several hundred indigenous Orang Laut people also lived along the nearby coast, rivers and on smaller islands. In 1819, the British East India Company, led by Sir Stamford Raffles, established a trading post on the island, which was used as a port along the spice route.[9] Singapore became one of the most important commercial and military centres of the British Empire, and the hub of British power in Southeast Asia.
During the Second World War, the British colony was occupied by the Japanese after the Battle of Singapore, which Winston Churchill called "Britain’s greatest defeat".[10] Singapore reverted to British rule in 1945, immediately after the war. Eighteen years later, in 1963, the city, having achieved independence from Britain, merged with Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak to form Malaysia. However, Singapore’s merger proved unsuccessful, and, less than two years later, it seceded from the federation and became an independent republic within the Commonwealth of Nations on 9 August 1965. Singapore was admitted to the United Nations on 21 September of that year.
Since independence, Singapore’s standard of living has risen dramatically. Foreign direct investment and a state-led drive to industrialization based on plans drawn up by the Dutch economist Albert Winsemius have created a modern economy focused on industry, education and urban planning.[11] Singapore is the 5th wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP (PPP) per capita.[12] As of January 2009, Singapore’s official reserves stand at US0.3 billion.
In 2009, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Singapore the tenth most expensive city in the world in which to live—the third in Asia, after Tokyo and Osaka.[13] The 2009 Cost of Living survey, by consultancy firm Mercer, has ranked Singapore similarly as the tenth most expensive city for expatriates to live in.[14][15]
The population of Singapore including non-residents is approximately 4.99 million.[16] Singapore is highly cosmopolitan and diverse with Chinese people forming an ethnic majority with large populations of Malay, Indian and other people. English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese are the official languages.[17]
Singapore is a parliamentary republic, and the Constitution of Singapore establishes representative democracy as the nation’s political system.[18] The People’s Action Party (PAP) dominates the political process and has won control of Parliament in every election since self-government in 1959.

The English language name Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, "Lion-city", but it is possible that one element of its name had a more distant original source.[20] Pura comes from Sanskrit puram, "city, fortress", and is related to Greek polis, "citadel, city".
Singa- comes from Sanskrit siṃha, which means lion. Today the city-state is referred to as the Lion City. The first records of settlement in Singapore are from the 2nd century AD.[23] The island was an outpost of the Sumatran Srivijaya empire and originally had the Javanese name Temasek (‘sea town’). Temasek (Tumasek) rapidly became a significant trading settlement, but declined in the late 14th century. There are few remnants of old Temasek in Singapore, but archaeologists in Singapore have uncovered artifacts of that and other settlements.
Between the 16th and early 19th centuries, Singapore island was part of the Sultanate of Johor. During the Malay-Portugal wars in 1613, the settlement was set ablaze by Portuguese troops.[24] The Portuguese subsequently held control in that century and the Dutch in the 18th, but throughout most of this time the island’s population consisted mainly of fishermen.[citation needed]

LONDON (Reuters) – England’s honey bee colonies are dying at an alarming rate due to disease and a lack of coordinated response by health authorities, a parliamentary report concluded on Tuesday.
England and Wales have around 250,000 colonies of honey bees, which contribute around 200 million pounds to the economy since they are solely responsible for pollinating nearly 40 commercial crops.

Despite their importance, the government’s department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) has given little priority to bee health and failed to get beekeepers to report on colony health, the report said.

"Success in tackling disease incidence in honey bees and livestock will require the department to work more collaboratively with farmers, beekeepers and leading academic researchers in these areas," the report by parliament’s Committee of Public Accounts said.

Inspects found that between 7 and 8 percent of colonies had died, with the percentage increasing over the past few years.

As well as changes to habitat and food supply, the bees were being adversely affected by cold and weather, with the threat that up to 30 percent of colonies could be lost over the winter.

In order to get on top of the problem, the report recommended that Defra intensify its testing for disease and work more closely with beekeepers.
